Action Councils and Terms of Reference

The CNA board of directors and staff are supported by:

  • 4 standing committees of the board
  • 2 standing committees of the Canadian Academy of Nursing accountable to the board
  • 6 action councils support the CNA CEO; information about each council appears below
    • Anti-racism Action Council
    • Francophone Action Council
    • Future of Nursing Action Council
    • Indigenous Action Council
    • Professional Nursing and Membership Council
    • Specialty Nursing Practice Action Council

TERMS OF REFERENCE:

Purpose of the council
The Anti-racism Action Council is one of six councils within the Canadian Nurses Association that will advance a vision for the future of nursing that enables CNA to meet operational and strategic objectives and support CNA operations in an action capacity.

Responsibilities
The Anti-racism Action Council will support the CNA CEO in executing the strategic goals and annual operational plan. The council will provide guidance and recommendations from the unique perspective of lived experience, education and practice. The council will also:

  • Support CNA in advancing its organizational priorities and strategies (this could include but is not limited to drafting position statements, planning events, developing communication content, etc.)
  • Provide guidance on ways CNA projects and services can be adapted to meet the needs of nurses and patients across Canada
  • Engage nurses and nursing students (undergraduate and graduate) on their experiences
  • Identify issues, opportunities and barriers related to nurses in Canada and advise on organizational direction on issues
  • Investigate existing initiatives, internal and external to CNA, and identify gaps
  • Assist CNA staff and other councils as needed in raising awareness of the issues relevant to the Anti-racism Action Council and CNA
  • Uphold the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action in the work of the council

Accountability and confidentiality
The Anti-racism Action Council is accountable and reports to the CEO via a dedicated CNA employee. The council will interface with and be supported by the above-mentioned CNA staff.

All information, discussions and materials shared during council meetings are strictly confidential. Participants are expected to maintain the confidentiality of all information disclosed and not to share, distribute or use this information outside of these meetings without proper authorization.

Council members are expected to ensure that they are up to date on the content covered in all meetings and actively contribute to discussions and decision-making processes both in meetings and asynchronously. Active and meaningful participation is essential for the success and effectiveness of the council.

Council members are required to maintain an active membership with CNA in order to continue serving on the council. This ensures alignment with the organization’s values and objectives.

The Professional Nursing and Membership Council will provide guidance and recommendations to the CNA board of directors related to the following items:

  • Relationships with provincial/territorial and other professional nursing associations
  • Impacts of provincial/territorial and other professional nursing associations on CNA and its membership
  • Identifying tools and resources CNA may deploy to support the provincial/territorial groups in their start-up and ongoing operations, and vice versa
  • Strategies to formalize communication and collaboration among CNA and emerging/existing professional nursing associations
  • Identify strategies to deliver and sustain a strong and cohesive professional voice for nursing across the country
  • Uphold the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action in the work of the council

Accountability
The council is accountable to the board of directors.
